City as a service – Transformative Solutions at the Intersections of Mobility and Planning

“The focus of this course is to get a deep understanding for Shanghai’s movement challenges from a planning perspective on the one hand and the related socio-cultural implications on the other. Using high tech traffic simulation and modeling tools and pairing them with demand analyses methods, GIS analysis and ‘soft’ cultural approaches, students will explore ways to generate user and context specific insights and develop integrated solutions that merge transport/traffic and urban planning strategy thinking.

The students will explore how the future mobility plans of Shanghai can be dynamically and responsively optimized through the use of real time data and systemic analyses of the application of ICT in massive urban environments. At the same time, their research and projects will be based on a deep reflection and analysis of the introduction of future mobility technologies in Shanghai’s urban fabric, such as A.I mobility infrastructures, self-driving vehicles, multimodal public & private transportation, self-sustainable shared transportation models and autonomous public transportation fleets.”

Baltic International Summer School- ‚City as a Service – Where Urban Planning and the Mobility Revolution meet“,
HafenCity University Hamburg, 2017

Vorlesung zu Harmonisierung von Technologieentwicklung, Stadtplanungszyklen und Raumprogrammierung

Abstrakt:

Technological advancement and urban growth offer a vast array of new opportunities to urbanites to enjoy their way of living: digital communication empowers the individual and changes the overall business framework, data processing capabilities turn infrastructure into on-demand services, growing population numbers mean more social interaction and transactions.

At the same time, the demand for mobility and consequently ‘space’ increase the pressure on land-use and resources alike. Balancing the interests in this highly complex and dynamic multi-stakeholder marketplace is key to a city that wants to serve and connect its inhabitants and constituencies.

The fundamental shift towards a comprehensive designing of the urban environment thus requires a look at all the different components and how they can work together.

Angewandte Studien und Projekte zu dynamischer Stadt-Mobilitätsplanung der Zukunft unter Einbeziehung unterschiedlicher Methodiken und digitaler Tools.

Kursbeschreibung (Unterrichtssprache Englisch):

“We explore ways to generate user and context specific insights and develop integrated design solutions that merge transport and urban planning with service design and market strategy thinking. We design mobility and its interscalarity components; from the shape of a curb or a curvature radii to an entire part of a city.

Through the deployment of modelling simulation, demand analyses methods, and GIS analysis, the course will focus on the way mobility is represented and will explore the transformative effects at hand“

Angewandte Studien und Kursprojekte zur eng verknüpften Beziehung zwischen Mobilität und Urban Design

Kursbeschreibung (Unterrichtssprache Englisch):

“Particularly the rapid developments in our digital and technological capabilities require a rethinking of individual mobility on the one hand and urban planning methods on the other. Creating new interfaces between the city context and innovative technologies is one of the challenges for the immediate future.

This course is designed to give participants the theoretical (methodology) and practical tools (available technologies) to create new ideas, scenarios, and business cases for context sensitive urban mobility in a real-life project”
